ProfessorBidyut Chakraborty, Vice Chancellor ofVisva Bharati University, has been injured when he was allegedly attacked by miscreants at the entrance of his official residence in presence of the Officer-in-charge, Santiniketan Police Station. The attack allegedly took place during a protest by students. Meanwhile, the university registrar has filed a complaint with the police.
The complainant stated, "I was informed by the Vice-Chancellor (Prof. Bidyut Chakrabarty) that he had been hit by stones by miscreants at the entrance of his official residence Purbita. He also informed me that the Officer-in-Charge, Santiniketan Police Station, was present on the spot when this happened. A little later, he further informed me that he had been hit in his neck and that he was feeling dizzy. He requested me to urgently send a doctor to his residence and to lodge a complaint to police."
Following the incident, the VC asked Chief Medical Officer, PM Hospital, Visva-Bharati, to send doctor/paramedics to the Vice-Chancellor’s residence. Later, the doctor from the P.M. Hospital went to VC's residence and treated him.
The complainant has requested police to take necessary action against the accused and also ensure the safety and security of the Vice-Chancellor and his family.
While, The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday claimed that the vice chancellor of Visva Bharati University was attacked by goons belonging to the Trinamool Congress as he tried to step out of his residence.
In a tweet, BJP's Suvendu Adhikari said, "Prof Bidyut Chakraborty, Vice Chancellor, Visva Bharati University, has been attacked by TMC goons as he tried to step out of his residence after more than two weeks. He got hurt as the goons pelted stones and even threw chairs towards him."
Adhikari went on to slam the Bengal government for "failing to provide protection to the vice chancellor of a reputed and world-renowned educational institution."
"Did they even intend to?" the Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly wrote.
Adhikari is the MLA from Nandigram and was previously one of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's most trusted aides before he joined the BJP in 2021. In his Twitter post, he also accused the TMC of "fueling anarchy and sheltering the anarchists."
However, the students refrained from producing a written demand, instead pressed for the immediate stepdown of V-C Chakraborty and informed the public relations officer of the university, Mahua Banerjee.
Meanwhile, the annual convocation of the university was also postponed amid the raging protests by the students. The convocation was supposed to be held in presence of the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, and the Governor of West Bengal, CV Ananda Bose.
Earlier in the day, protests broke out between the administration and the students demonstrating outside the V-C's residence within the campus.
Meanwhile, Prof Chakraborty on Monday condemned the country's education system. Through a press release, he claimed: "What derails the academia most is a regular intervention of politicians who may not always be even inclined to gauge its adverse impact on the future of the country."
He added, "Even in the selection of principals of schools and colleges and vice chancellors of universities, the process was not free from the instructions of the politicians."
