Mumbai University failed to announce 35% exam results in time last yr

Most public universities in the state could not announce results of all their final exams within the stipulated period of 30 days or even the extended time of up to 45 days last year, adding to the anxiety of lakhs of students.

In a recent review by the governor, it was found that many state universities are defaulting on timely result announcements. While Mumbai University did not announce results of almost 35% of 426 summer 2022 exams in 45 days, Pune declared over 50% of them after deadline. Solapur and Marathwada fared poorly too.

Only SNDT Women's University announced almost all results within the 30-day period and Shivaji University, Kolhapur, closely followed.

Data presented on universities’ results schedule cuts a sorry picture for the vice-chancellors. The fact that the governor needed to school them about the provisions of the Act, which requires them to monitor the progress of results and submit a report on the delays to him, is appalling. One can only hope that this year would be better than the previous one.

In a meeting with vice-chancellors on Monday, governor and chancellor of state universities, Ramesh Bais, rapped state universities based on the review.

With results season looming, students across the state are dreading the delay and its impact on their prospects of higher education. Despite conducting most major exams online and at college level in summer of 2022, MU's results were delayed, said a college principal. "This year, we are already worried as results of some winter 2022 exams were announced almost five months later. This will have a major impact on final exam results too," he added.

On Thursday, MU issued the exam schedule for semester VI mass media students. "This exam was to start on April 12, it is starting on May 30. Dates were pushed as MU could not announce semester V results on time. Now the exam ends in June, we have no idea how late the results will be," said a student.

As per Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, director of exams, is expected to submit a detailed report with reasons for delay, through vice-chancellor to the governor. It was learnt that the governor, on Monday, noted that they are not getting a single report from universities, indicating that vice-chancellors are not monitoring the process. The governor, in a press statement, said vice-chancellors will be held accountable for delay in results. An official present at the meeting, said the governor has taken serious cognisance of the matter.
