After a hiatus of three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Delhi University is all set to hold its student union elections on September 22.

As per the schedule released by the university, the last date for receipt of nomination papers of candidates and affidavits is till 3 pm on September 12. Scrutiny of nominations and publication of the list of duly nominated candidates will take place at 3.15 pm and 6 pm on the same date. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is until 5 pm on September 13.

On September 22, the election will take place between 8.30 am and 1 pm and 3 pm and 7 pm for students in day and evening colleges respectively. The date and venue for counting of votes are yet to be announced.

The prescribed nomination papers for office bearers of DUSU are to be put in a sealed box kept in the office of the chief election officer, DUSU Elections 2023-24,… from 10 am to 5 pm on any working day,” said the varsity’s notification.

In the last DUSU election in 2019, the president, vice-president and joint secretary were from the ABVP and an NSUI candidate was elected to the secretary’s post.

Meanwhile, student leaders have begun putting up flyers and posters across North Campus.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) said: “The Delhi University administration has announced dates for the students’ union elections. ABVP Delhi welcomes this much-awaited decision on behalf of the entire student community.”

ABVP Delhi state minister Harsh Atri said, “DUSU elections are going to be held after 2019. It will once again provide a new positive leadership to the university. The ABVP-led student union has done important work on the university campus over the last four years. This time too, based on its positive and constructive work, the ABVP will win with a huge majority.”

The All India Students’ Association in a statement Thursday said, “In 2023, AISA will fight the election to save Delhi University from the attack of privatisation and commercialisation of education.”

In its August 1 notification, the varsity said Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh has appointed office bearers and members to the central council to oversee the election procedure. The V-C also appointed principals of colleges and heads of institutions as office bearers and members of the council, in their respective colleges.
