IIT Hyderabad Achieves Significant Leap in the 2026 edition of QS World University Rankings by Subject

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has recorded a major leap in the QS World University Rankings 2026 by Subject, entering the global Top 400 in Engineering & Technology with a rank of 395, marking a sharp improvement from the 501–550 band in 2025. The jump of over 100 ranks within a year highlights the rapid rise of IITH as a globally recognised hub for Engineering research, innovation, and interdisciplinary technology development.

The latest rankings also reflect the institute’s strong academic and research ecosystem, with six Engineering disciplines placed in the global Top 300. These include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and Chemical Engineering, each ranked in the 251–300 band globally, marking a significant improvement from last year where these disciplines were largely in the 501–550 range or below.

In addition, Computer Science & Information Systems and Physics & Astronomy have improved sharply to the 351–400 band, compared to their earlier positions in the 701–750 and 501–550 ranges respectively, while Materials Science has advanced to the 301–350 band from 401–550 last year. Overall, nine subjects from IITH featured in the global rankings, reflecting a steady expansion from previous years and signalling the institute’s growing global research footprint. The rankings are based on key indicators such as academic reputation, employer perception, research citations, h-index, and international collaborations, highlighting both academic excellence and real-world impact.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject is among the most widely followed global benchmarks, analysing over 6,000 institutions worldwide and ranking nearly 2,000 Universities across 55 disciplines and five broad subject areas.

Commenting on the achievement, Prof. B S Murty, Director, IITH, said: “This significant growth in the QS Subject Rankings reflects the consistent efforts of our faculty, and students in building strong academic, research & innovation-driven ecosystem. As a young IIT, our focus has been on advancing interdisciplinary Engineering research in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Materials, Sustainable technologies, and Next-generation manufacturing. The rapid improvement in global rankings demonstrates how IITH is emerging as an institution that combines cutting-edge research with impactful innovation, aligned with our ethos of Inventing and Innovating in Technology for Humanity.”

“This year’s QS subject rankings reflect IITH’s growing strength across multiple disciplines. The expansion from one to seven subjects in the top 500 highlights the depth and consistency of our academic and research ecosystem. It is an encouraging validation of our collective efforts toward global academic excellence." —Dr. Saurabh Sandilya, Nodal QS Officer, IITH.

With continued investments in innovation & research infrastructure, global collaborations, and interdisciplinary education, IITH is steadily strengthening its position among leading Engineering institutions worldwide, while contributing to India’s growing role in global Science and Technology innovation.
