IIM Jammu Commemorates Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas with Seminar and Plantation Drive


As part of the nationwide celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu, through its Dharohar - The Heritage Club, organized a seminar and plantation drive in collaboration with Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri (J&K). These events honoured the legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the iconic leader of India’s tribal freedom movement, and celebrated the invaluable contributions of tribal communities to nation-building.

Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas is observed annually on 15th November to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The day highlights his efforts in India’s freedom struggle and recognizes the heritage, culture, and socio-economic contributions of tribal communities. The seminar, held at Vivekananda Hall, explored the theme of preserving tribal heritage through the promotion of language and culture, focusing on Jammu and Kashmir’s tribal communities. The event commenced with lamp lighting ceremony. 

The seminar, held at Vivekananda Hall, brought together distinguished guests, including Prof. (Dr.) Rafique Anjum, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri and Mr. Vishal Pahari, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri. Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu presided over the event.

Prof. (Dr.) Rafique Anjum, Chair Professor in Tribal Studies, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri delivered a thought-provoking talk on the critical role of language in safeguarding tribal culture. He shared insights into the diverse tribal communities of India, their demographics, and the richness of their dialects, with special emphasis on Kashmiri tribal languages. Prof. Anjum spoke about government programs aimed at uplifting tribal communities and highlighted the importance of imparting education in one’s mother tongue, citing the vision of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mr. Vishal Pahari, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University emphasized the vital role of mother tongues in preserving cultural identity and fostering pride among tribal communities. Highlighting language as a vessel for traditions and collective memory, he stressed the importance of safeguarding tribal dialects in Jammu and Kashmir. He urged educational institutions to promote native languages in curricula and cultural activities, ensuring the heritage of tribal societies endures in a globalized world. His message inspired the audience to recognize language as a powerful link to roots, resilience, and identity.

Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, addressed the gathering, celebrating the legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and commending the Government of India for giving due recognition to tribal contributions in recent times. He acknowledged the vital role of tribal communities as custodians of natural resources and emphasized the need for increased tribal representation in educational institutions. He expressed IIM Jammu’s commitment to supporting marginalized communities through counselling, mentorship, and collaborative initiatives.

Present on the occasion was Dr. V. Rajkumar, Chairperson Student Affairs, Dr. Apurva, Co-Chairperson, Student Affairs, IIM Jammu. A plantation drive was organized at the IIM Jammu campus to mark the occasion. The dignitaries accompanied by faculty, staff, and students participated in planting saplings, symbolizing the institute’s commitment to sustainability and honouring the tribal communities’ deep connection with nature. The event culminated with the national anthem.

The celebrations concluded with the distribution of certificates to winners of a quiz competition held as part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas activities. The seminar and plantation drive provided a platform to promote awareness, inclusivity, and sustainability while honouring the contributions of tribal communities.
