The Department of Bioinformatics, operating under the School of Earth, Biological and Environmental Sciences (SEBES) of Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) celebrated the Bioinformatics Day to commemorate the 103rd birth anniversary of renowned Indian scientist Dr. G.N. Ramachandran. The event organized under the patronship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh was attended by Dr. Gulshan Wadhwa, a former scientist and distinguished professor at Sharda University, New Delhi as the keynote speaker. Dr. Gulshan Wadhwa, a former Scientist-G and Advisor at the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, in his address emphasized the importance of innovation in scientific research, drawing on examples from recent Nobel Prize-winning studies.
He highlighted that many Nobel laureates had no idea their work would one day receive such global recognition, but what set them apart was that they approached problems differently; “doing the same, but doing it differently.” Dr. Wadhwa also reflected on his extensive three-decade career with DBT, sharing insights from his involvement with numerous flagship initiatives, including the establishment and support of over 150 DBT Bioinformatics centres across India. His address inspired the audience, particularly the students, encouraging them to pursue excellence with dedication and a fresh perspective.
CUSB Public Relation Officer (PRO) Mohammad Mudassir Alam said that earlier in the introductory remarks, Prof. R.S. Rathore, Head, Dept. of Bioinformatics, paid tribute to G.N. Ramachandran, describing him as one of the most accomplished biologists India has produced. Prof. Rathore spoke of the legendary dedication of Prof. Ramachandran and his PhD student, Prof. C. Ramakrishnan, in developing the groundbreaking Ramachandran Map and their work on collagen structure; likening their tireless effort to a form of tapasya (spiritual devotion). He emphasized that such a culture of focused, persistent work remains essential for scientific excellence. Prof. Rizwanul Haque, Dean, SEBES, highlighted recent academic and research initiatives undertaken by the school and urged students to draw inspiration from the lives and contributions of great scientists like GN Ramachandran. The seminar was attended by faculty members, including Prof. Ajay Kr. Singh (HBTU, Kanpur), Prof. Ashesh Shanker, Dr. D.V. Singh, Dr. K.K. Ojha, Dr. V. K. Singh, Dr. Anil Kumar along with research scholars and students.
