Renowned Economist Dr. Augusto Lopez Claros delivers lecture at JMI


The Department of Political Science, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organised a special lecture on ‘Economic Governance in a Post-Covid World’ by the renowned Economist Dr. Augusto Lopez Claros, the Executive Director of Global Governance Forum on Wednesday November 23, 2022 in Dayar-e-Mir Taqi Mir Conference Hall of the university. Prof M. Muslim Khan, Head, Department of Political Science introduced the experts, Dr. Augusto Lopez Claros, Economist and Dr, Arther L Dahl, President of the International Environment Forum.The convenor of the Event Prof Bulbul Dhar James from the Political Science Department, JMI set the stage for the discussion with the irreversible impact of the Pandemic in terms attitudes about efficiency versus resilience, the future of capitalism, industrial policy, enhanced economic activity and significantly to the role of government and institutions. There is potential for a long-term shift in how institutions support people, through safety nets and a more inclusive social contract.The Vice Chancellor JMI, Prof. Najma Akhtar chaired the Session and at the outset stated that many ongoing trends in the international economy and Polity are being accelerated by the impact of the pandemic. The extensive impact includes the digital economy, remote working and learning, telemedicine, and delivery services amongst others. She further stated that Power imbalances in global institutions need to be corrected to give fair recognition to the needs and rights of the two-thirds of the world’s population who reside in the Global South. She said that she looked forward to Dr. Claro’s analysis of the impact of the Pandemic on myriad sections of society and the significant impact on Gender and the prescriptions for the Future.Dr. Augusto Lopez Claros gave a succinct discourse on the lessons from the Pandemic pointing out that the experience has raised multiple questions about our economic system, its resilience to shocks and, more generally, whether it is on a sustainable path. Taking up Prof Najma Akhtar’s points he discussed the lessons learnt and prescriptions for the Future, starting with the fact that It was necessary to redefine the meaning of national security from well-equipped military establishments to Human Security and development parameters Health and Education. Further he pointed towards the one characteristic of corona viruses and similar pathogens are that they pose risks to the entire human species. And hence broadening the safety net is a good investment.Dr. Arthur L Dahl focused on Ecological and climate change concerns and questioned the assumption of Neoclassical Economic Paradigm of the market and made a persuasive plea for Ecological Economics.The Lecture theatre was packed with JMI Faculty and Students from across disciplines and a very lively Question and answer Session followed. The Experts gifted the book co-authored by them and published by CUP called ‘ Global Governance and The Emergence Of The Global Institutions for the 21st century’ to the Political Science Department Library.The Event ended with a vote of thanks, by Dr .Firdous Azmat Siddiqui, a gender activist and Faculty of the Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women Studies, JMI.
