IIT Patna invites applications for admission to PhD course


The Indian Institute of Technology-Patna (IIT-P) has invited applications from eligible candidates for admission to its PhD programme commencing in January, 2024.

Candidates desirous of pursuing PhD programmes in chemical and biochemical engineering, chemistry, civil and environmental engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, humanities and social sciences, metallurgical and materials engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, and physics can apply online till November 16.

The upper age limit is 28 years for junior research fellows (JRF) and 32 years for senior research fellows (SRF). The age limit is relaxed up to five years in the case of SC/ ST, OBC, and women candidates. The reservation of seats in admission for candidates belonging to different categories will be as per the government rules.

IIT-Patna’s academic dean A K Thakur said the financial support will be available to eligible students as per the government of India norms. At present, total emoluments are Rs 37,000/-per month for the first two years and Rs 42,000/-per month for subsequent years. Research assistantships from external funding organisations will be available as per the terms and conditions of the concerned funding organisations.

The application fee is Rs 1,000 (for general candidates) and Rs 500 (for reserved category candidates). The application fee should be paid online. After the successful submission of the online application, candidates shall receive application details at their respective registered email addresses.

The candidates are required to take a printout of the application details received in their email after submitting an online application. This printout along with self-attested copies of mark sheets & certificates (from Class X to highest degree obtained/appeared), caste certificate (if applicable), GATE /NET/relevant certificate related to any fellowship, experience certificate, other testimonials (both sides), and printed e-receipt of online payment must be produced on the day of test/interview, failing which the candidature is liable to be rejected.

Candidates, applying for more than one department, must submit a separate application with separate payment of the application fee. A fresh fee payment is required for each application.

“The call letters to eligible candidates will be sent through email on November 27. The entrance test/interview will be held between December 6 and 12. The result is likely to be published on December 20 and the offer letters will be issued on December 27,” the dean said.
