IIM Jammu Hosts Eminent Guest Talk as Part of "KYC - Know Your Constitution" Event

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu hosted an Eminent Guest Talk as part of the "KYC - Know Your Constitution" event at its Jagti Campus. Organized to commemorate National Constitution Day and the 75th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Indian Constitution, the event featured Hon'ble Justice Shri B. L. Bhat, Chairman, Reservation Commission, UT of Ladakh, and Former Judge, High Court of J&K, Former Chairperson, NCLAT and Shri D.C. Raina, Advocate General, J & K, Member, Arbitration Committee, JKIAC as distinguished speakers. Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu presided over the event and delivered the welcome address.
The session began with a lamp-lighting ceremony, symbolizing knowledge and enlightenment. Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu felicitated the esteemed speakers, following which the gathering united to recite the Preamble, reinforcing democratic values.
Shri D.C. Raina, Advocate General, J & K, Member, Arbitration Committee, JKIAC, graced the session on “The Role of Young Leaders in Upholding Constitutional Principles” as the Chief Guest. He eloquently shed light on the significance of November 26th, celebrated as the day the Indian Constitution was adopted. He highlighted the instrumental role of the Constituent Assembly in framing the Constitution, drawing inspiration from various global constitutions. Emphasizing the fundamental Rights of Citizens and the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP), he encouraged the audience to gain a deeper understanding of their constitutional rights and responsibilities. He also discussed the concept of constitutional morality and its critical importance in contemporary governance. Concluding his address, he drew attention to the intricate calligraphy of the original Constitution, a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship that went into its creation.
Hon'ble Justice Shri B. L. Bhat, Chairman, Reservation Commission, UT of Ladakh, and Former Judge, High Court of J&K, Former Chairperson, NCLAT delivered an insightful address on the key features of the Indian Constitution. In his speech, he elaborated on the principle of judicial review, underscoring the Constitution’s crucial role in ensuring that laws passed by Parliament remain within their constitutional boundaries, particularly in the context of ultra vires legislation. He also referenced the landmark Kesavananda Bharati case, which reaffirmed the basic structure doctrine, highlighting its significance in safeguarding the integrity of the Constitution. He emphasized the importance of the phrase “We, the People” in the Preamble, reflecting the sovereignty of the people and the collective will of the nation. Passionately, he spoke about the Constitution’s commitment to equality and the protection of individual rights, urging all citizens to uphold these fundamental principles.
Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, delivered the welcome address, expressing gratitude to Hon’ble Mr. Justice B.L. Bhat and Shri D.C. Raina for their invaluable time and unwavering support to the Institute. He provided an inspiring overview of IIM Jammu’s journey, from its inception with 47 students to now hosting over 1,100 students across various programs. He highlighted the Institute's efforts to establish itself as a premier management school globally within a short span of 7–8 years, crediting the dedication of faculty, staff, and students for milestones such as moving into the new campus in record time.
He also emphasized the unique position of Jammu as the only city in India hosting an Institute of National Importance, further strengthened by the celebration of the Indian Constitution. Reflecting on the significance of the Constitution, he spoke about its role in granting equal rights and guiding democratic principles. He acknowledged the distinguished guests as brand ambassadors of IIM Jammu, commending their contributions in upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution and fostering an enriching exchange of ideas during the session. He urged all citizens to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
Prof. Jabir Ali reiterated the Constitution’s pivotal role as the framework for governance and underscored the responsibility of every citizen in upholding constitutional values for a fair and just society.
An engaging interaction session followed, allowing students to directly interact with the dignitaries, enriching their understanding of constitutional rights and principles. The event also celebrated participants of a debate competition on the topic, “India’s Labour Law Reforms: Prioritizing Corporate Interests Over Labour Welfare,” with certificate distribution. The Impact Club of IIM Jammu delivered the Vote of Thanks, marking the culmination of the event with a group photograph, symbolizing the shared spirit of learning and reflection.
The Public Policy Club of IIM Jammu organized the KYC - Know Your Constitution event on 24th November 2024 to commemorate Constitution Day. The event featured a Turncoat Debate on the topic, “India’s labour law reforms prioritize corporate interests over labour welfare,” fostering critical analysis and public speaking skills. Participants presented diverse perspectives, balancing the potential of labour reforms to enhance industrial growth and investment with concerns about worker rights and social security. The event provided an engaging platform for students to explore socio-legal issues and deepen their understanding of the Indian Constitution, making it a memorable experience for all involved.
IIM Jammu continues to inspire and educate future leaders by fostering critical discussions on fundamental topics that shape the nation.
